چکیده

The electric dipole moments of the isolated amino acid tryptophan and small glycine-based peptides (WGn, n = 1−5, W = tryptophan, G = glycine) have been measured by deflection of a molecular beam in an inhomogeneous electric field. The measurements are compared to the results of ab initio calculations and Monte-Carlo simulations. The conformation and the flexibility of the peptides, at different temperatures, are discussed. The WGn peptides are much more floppy than an isolated tryptophan, even a single glycine is enough to make the peptide floppy on the timescale of the electric deflection measurements. Microscopic Parameters in the Excited State of Toluene and Some of Its Haloderavatives

The Ultraviolet-visible (UV) spectra of toluene, ortho-bromo and para-bromo toluene in different solvents have been studied. The electric dipole moments and polarizabilities in the molecular excited electronic states were determined. It was found that the electric dipole moments for the excited states (µ*) and the ground states (µ) of these compounds are equal, and the change in dipole moment i...

Electric susceptibility of unsolvated glycine-based peptides.

The DC electric susceptibilities of unsolvated glycine-based peptides, WGn (W = tryptophan and G = glycine) with n = 1-5, have been measured by deflection of a molecular beam in an electric field. These are the first electric deflection measurements performed on peptides. At 300 K the susceptibilities are in the range of 200-400 A(3). By far the largest contribution to the susceptibilities is f...

On the orientation of the backbone dipoles in native folds.

The role of electrostatic interactions in determining the native fold of proteins has been investigated by analyzing the alignment of peptide bond dipole moments with the local electrostatic field generated by the rest of the molecule with and without solvent effects. This alignment was calculated for a set of 112 native proteins by using charges from a gas phase potential. Most of the peptide ...

Aggregation of polyalanine in a hydrophobic environment.

The dimerization of polyalanine peptides in a hydrophobic environment was explored using replica exchange molecular dynamics simulations. A nonpolar solvent (cyclohexane) was used to mimic, among other hydrophobic environments, the hydrophobic interior of a membrane in which the peptides are fully embedded. Our simulations reveal that while the polyalanine monomer preferentially adopts a beta-h...

Induced Dipole–Dipole Interactions Influence the Unfolding Pathways of Wild-Type and Mutant Amyloid β-Peptides

Amyloid-forming proteins undergo a structural transition from α-helical to disordered conformations and, ultimately, cross-β fibrils. The unfolding and aggregation of the amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) have been implicated in the development and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). However, the events underlying the initial structural transition leading to the ...
